For some reason I think I might want to use car cover material to serve as a dust cover of sorts for various fragile things in my room (read model aircraft and whatnot) thanks to the home builders not quite undertanding sealing and its importance. I wonder if it's possible to buy some that isn't designed to fit over a car...

What kind? Do you just mean oilcloth or tarpaulin or something? PVC sheeting, maybe?

go to a fabric store, and buy some fabric that fits your needs. They sell it by the yard. Michael's or JoAnn fabrics are a couple around these parts.
